11th Scrap Recycling & Waste Utilisation Drive, and awareness conference held at NALCO, Angul

ANGUL :The  11th Scrap Recycling and Waste Utilisation Drive, an Awareness Conference was held at Nalco’s S&P Complex at Angul today. The conference was organised as part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ (AKAM) celebration with a theme ‘Sustainable and Circular Bharat: Towards Zero Waste in Metals Processing’.

This was jointly organised by National Aluminium Company (NALCO), Jawaharlal Nehru Aluminium Research Development & Design Centre (JNARDDC), Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI), National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) and Metal Scrap Trade Corporation Limited (MSTC).

The conference was inaugurated by Shri R.P. Gupta, Director, Ministry of Mines, Govt. of India, in the presence of Pankaj Kumar Sharma, Director (Production), NALCO, Vikas Raj, Under Secretary, Ministry of Mines, Govt. of India, Anupam Agnihotri, Director (JNARDDC),Satish Kohli, Advisor ((MRAI), and A.K. Swain, Executive Director (S&P), Nalco. Besides, senior officials and representatives from many industries including aluminium and steel sectors, students from technical institutions like IGIT, Sarang, local ITIs, engineers and technocrats were notably present on the occasion.   

 

 Addressing the gathering, the distinguished guests deliberated on the current practices followed by the industries on handling and utilisation of the wastes generated and the challenges and issues faced by the industry in utilisation of these wastes. The speakers also highlighted that the concepts like Circular economy and waste utilization are indeed pivotal in creating a more sustainable and resource-efficient approach to production and consumption. Deliberations were also made as how the waste materials can be converted and brought back to the economy as various downstream products or any value-added products. It was also opined that the Metal sector can play a significant and lead role in the circular economy model and would help in utilising the natural resources in a sustainable way.

Representatives from Vedanta, Nava Bharat, MSTSC, Green Energy, policymakers, members from State Pollution Control Board (SPCB), and researchers also participated in the conference. Apart from conference, a high-level delegation also visited the Smelter plant and had practical exposure towards the best practices being followed for waste utilisation and Scrap recycling in Nalco. It may be noted that the conference provided the required platform to understand the challenges and issues faced by the aluminium Industry in Scrap Recycling & utilisation of wastes.

On this occasion, a mini science exhibition on the theme of waste management and recycling was also organised by the students of SVM, DPS and IGIT, Sarang.
