After three failed attempts, Delhi mayor elections to take place now on February 16
NEW DELHI:The fourth attempt will be made on February 16 for the election of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and 6 members in Delhi. Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena has given approval for the meeting.
Earlier the meeting was called thrice, but due to uproar in the house, the meeting was postponed and the election of the mayor could not be held.
LG Saxena said in a statement that a meeting would be called at Dr SP Mukherjee Civic Center in A Block at 11 am on February 16. Earlier on February 9, the MCD had got the nod from the Delhi government on the proposed date and only the final nod was left from the LG.
The Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were unable to elect a new mayor, deputy mayor and members of the standing committee after three adjournments in the House. It was then forced to come to a consensus for a new date.
The Aam Aadmi Party won 134 seats in the MCD elections, ending the BJP's 15-year rule. At the same time, the Bharatiya Janata Party had won 104 seats in the MCD.
After the elections, on January 6, the MCD called a meeting of the House for the first time. The second meeting was called on 24 January and the third meeting on 6 February. In all the three meetings, elections could not be held due to ruckus by the members of BJP and AAP.
Two months have passed since the MCD elections, but Delhi is yet to get a mayor. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party had moved the Supreme Court on the issue. The court has issued notices to the LG, the presiding officer, the corporation commissioner and the Delhi government. Now the next hearing in this matter is to be held on February 13.
