Clashes Erupted In Assam's Silchar Following Protest Against Waqf Law in Assam

 Tension ran high in Assam's Cachar district, as a rally against the Waqf (Amendment) Act turned violent on Sunday after protesters pelted stones at police, prompting a lathi charge by the authorities.

A senior official said clashes occurred between the protesters and police.

The official stated that several hundred people gathered in the Berenga area of Silchar city to oppose the recently passed law.

 

 "Around 300-400 people were blocking the road and protesting. When we tried to clear the way, some of them threw stones at us. We had to resort to a mild lathi charge to disperse the crowd," the official said.

A case has been registered, but no one has been detained or arrested yet,official said.

Protesters, reportedly  waved black flags, raised slogans against the BJP government, and demanded the repeal of the Act.
