Congress demands PM take Parliament into confidence on 'tariff' issue

WASHINGTON” The Congress party, reacting to the latest statement by US President Donald Trump on Saturday, said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should take Parliament into confidence on the issue of "tariffs" during the second phase of the budget session starting March 10.

On Friday, US President Trump claimed that India has agreed to "significantly reduce" its tariffs. He reiterated that India imposes heavy duties on the US, making it difficult to sell products there.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, citing Trump’s statement, posted on X, "Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is in Washington DC for trade talks with the US. Meanwhile, President Trump makes this statement. What exactly has India agreed to? Are the interests of Indian farmers and the manufacturing sector being compromised?" He added, "When Parliament resumes on March 10, the Prime Minister should take Parliament into confidence on this matter."

The Congress also said that the US President’s claim that he is "exposing" India is an insult to the country. Trump further said that, out of fear of him, Narendra Modi has reduced tariffs. Narendra Modi should clarify what compromises were made to appease Trump. Why has the nation’s honor been put at stake? This is an extremely serious matter. The Modi government must answer to the country. Additionally, an all-party meeting should be called to discuss every aspect of this issue, ensuring that national interest remains paramount.

It may be noted that US President Donald Trump, late Friday night, said, "India charges us very high tariffs. You can’t sell anything in India. However, India now wants to significantly reduce its tariffs because someone (US) is exposing what they’ve been doing."

In a media briefing, Trump said, "Our country has been looted by everyone. And now that’s over. I stopped it during my first term. Now we’re going to stop it completely because it’s very wrong. America has been looted by almost every country in the world from an economic perspective, a financial perspective, and a trade perspective."
