Congress to challenge Waqf Bill in Supreme Court: Jairam Ramesh

 NEW DELHI:The Congress party said on Friday that it will "very soon" challenge the constitutionality of the ‘Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025’, passed by Parliament, in the Supreme Court.

The Rajya Sabha approved the ‘Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025’ on Thursday, which includes several key provisions such as enhancing transparency in Waqf boards. With this, the bill was passed by Parliament. The Lok Sabha had passed the bill late Wednesday night around 2 a.m.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Jairam Ramesh wrote on the social media platform ‘X’, “The Congress will very soon challenge the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Supreme Court.” He added, “...We will continue to oppose all attacks by the Modi government on the principles, provisions, and traditions enshrined in the Constitution of India.”

 

 Ramesh stated that the Congress had challenged the ‘Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) 2019’, and the matter is currently under hearing in the Supreme Court. He also mentioned that the 2019 amendments to the ‘Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005’ were challenged by the Congress, and the hearing is ongoing in the Supreme Court.

The Congress leader further said, “The validity of the amendments to the ‘Conduct of Election Rules (2024)’ was challenged by the Congress, and it is being heard in the Supreme Court.” He added, “A petition by the Congress to uphold the original spirit of the ‘Places of Worship Act, 1991’ is also under hearing in the Supreme Court.”
