Dhenkanal: 34-year old woman killed by elephant in Hindol

 DHENKANAL: A 34-year-old woman of village Giridhar Prasad under Hindol forest Range in Dhenkanal district was killed by a wild elephant today morning near her village.The deceased has been identified as  Sobhagini Patnaik,34  of that village.The elephant attacked  and killed her while she had gone to attend call of the nature near the village at about 5am today.

According to forest department sources,there were about 14 elephant of a herd staying in nearby area for sometime.The woman had gone to near her village and by that time an elephant had face to face with her.The animal attacked her once and she ran away and for the second time the elephant trampled her to death.

 

 

 Sobbhagini died on the spot.As soon as the news reached to the village there was tension in the village who accused forest department of doing nothing to chase the elephant herd from the vicinity of their village. They demanded solar fencing among other things to prevent such type of deaths in future.

Ranger S Mishra  rushed to the spot with his staff and pacified the villagers promising steps to tackle elephant menace. He said initially rupees 60,000 will be paid to the victim’s family while after formalities remaining amount of ex-gratia rupees 6lakh will be paid later.

Hindol forest range which houses more than 100 elephants records recurrent human deaths by elephants. Despite massive awareness campaign by forest officials advising people not to venture into forest in evening or morning time.
