Dreaded criminal encountered by Dhenkanal police

DHENKANAL: Police in an encounter shot and injured a dreaded criminal who was wanted in 18 criminal cases in different police stations of Dhenkanal region. The injured criminal Debashis Behera,29 was first shifted to Dhenkanal district hospital and then referred to SCB Medical College Cuttack.This is the second encounter in a year by district police after the hardened criminal Subash Khuntia was encountered by police at Kamakhyanagar.

According to additional SP Suryamani Pradhan this encounter took place at about 4.30am today at Saunlia jungle near village Mangalpur under Sadar police station. Based on credible information that Debasis was planning a crime along with his two associates at the jungle,a police team led by SI Pradip Ranjan Patra rushed to the spot. They found the three sitting in a dark place and ordered them to surrender. Instead of surrendering Debasis

brought out the pistol and fired one shot towards police. The shot ,however, missed any police man.Then the police officials again called him to surrender by laying down the firearm but Debashis didn’t listen and again fired, by which the SI returned the fire. Debashis sustained gunshot injury in his right leg and fell down. In the meantime, his two associates managed to escape by motorcycle.

The additional SP also said that the injured Debashis was grabbed by a police team and shifted to hospital. He belongs to Godisahi village under Kamakhyanagar police station. He was involved in various crimes like attempt to murder, dacoity and robberies. The encounter took place when the trio was planning to attack a business man at Dhenkanal.
