Illegal mining operators arrested by police in Dhenkanal

DHENKANAL: Dhenkanal Sadar police have arrested two persons including the mining operator in connection with illegal mining of stone quarry at Bhuasuni hilly area,near village Ghatipur under Sadar police station area.

The arrested are the mining operator Durga Charan ratha,28,and his supervisor Bapino Sahoo,32 belong to the local village. Police also arrested 10 laborers and released them in police station on bail while Ratha and Sahoo were forwarded to court today.

There are reports of massive illegal mining activities going on in stone quarries of Bhuasuni hill under the direction of SP Abhinaba Sonkar.

A police team conducted a raid yesterday on a hilly area led by the IIC Lenka.The police officials found laborers were working and excavating stones from the quarries illegally without any permission. They seized five excavators,7 tractors and six other machines besides huge amount of explosives from the spot,

Police during the raid rounded up 12 persons including the mining operator Durga Ratha and detained him in the police station. On questioning Ratha couldn’t produce any document of any authorization to operate mining operations in hilly areas. Finally, he was arrested and forwarded to court today. Ratha said operations against the mining activities at Bhuasuni area will continue in coming days.
