Illiterates and liars are BJP's 'Barat' - Jairam Ramesh

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Jairam Ramesh calls the BJP a "procession of liars and the illiterates" and accusing them of spreading fake news from the U.S. to undermine the nation. Amid controversy over a supposed USAID grant, Congress alleged that the BJP fabricated claims about a $21 million fund meant to boost voter turnout in India, which actually pertained to Bangladesh. Ramesh clarified that USAID records show no such funding for India since 2008, with the $21 million instead allocated to a Bangladeshi civic program in 2022.

Ramesh questioned why the BJP spread this misinformation and accused them of anti-national acts by amplifying falsehoods from abroad. He demanded answers from PM Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on their silence when Donald Trump and Elon Musk repeatedly "insult" India. He suggested that this might be linked to concessions for Adani, compromising national pride.

Congress criticized Trump’s recent claim—his fourth—that the Biden administration allocated $21 million to increase Indian voter turnout, urging Modi to confront his "friend" and refute it firmly. The party also called for a white paper on foreign funding to India and legal action against the RSS-BJP ecosystem for baseless accusations against NGOs and political rivals.

In a Washington address, Trump claimed the $21 million was for his "friend" Modi to boost voter turnout, adding that he too wanted such funds for the U.S., while mentioning unverified funding to Bangladesh. The White House shared this clip online.
