Kolkata: Court to pronounce quantum of sentence in a while in rape-murder case of RG Kar female doctor

KOLKATA: A special court in Kolkata will on Monday pronounce the sentence to civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, convicted in the rape-murder case of a trainee female doctor of the government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The body of the trainee female doctor was found in the hospital premises of Kolkata in August 2024. Special court judge Anirban Das convicted Roy on January 18. According to media reports, the proceedings of the special court will begin on Monday at around 12 noon. Initially, the judge will allow Roy and the victim's parents to give their final statement on the case. After this, the judge of the special court will pronounce the sentence in the case.

The judge had already clarified on January 18 that the maximum punishment in this case could be 'death penalty', while the minimum punishment could be life imprisonment.

However, the sentencing process against Roy for the crime of rape and murder will be completed on Monday. But the investigation of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding 'tampering' and 'alteration' of evidence in the case will still continue.

Sources said that the CBI has already informed the special court that the scope of filing a supplementary charge sheet in the case of tampering with evidence is still open, and the case is pending on this particular aspect.

Let us tell you that the body of the trainee woman doctor was recovered from the seminar hall of the premises of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the morning of August 9 last year. The initial investigation of the case was done by a special investigation team of Kolkata Police, which arrested Roy later. However, the CBI began the investigation five days after the date of the crime and Roy was subsequently handed over to the central agency officials by the city police.

The trial process in the case began on November 11 last year. The verdict will be pronounced 59 days after the trial in the case began. The conviction process was completed after 162 days from the date of the crime. Now, the sentence will be pronounced on Monday, exactly 164 days from the date of the crime.
