Land version of anti-tank guided missile Amogha-3 hit the target accurately
Hyderabad-based defense company Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has designed the third generation man portable Amogha-3. The second generation anti-tank guided missile Amogha has a range of 2.5 to 2.8 km (1.6 to 1.7 mi). To develop the range of the missile, two missiles were test-fired in September 2015 at the Babina Army Range in Madhya Pradesh. In the test, both the missiles hit their respective targets with accuracy. In these tests, no significant difference was found between this missile and other anti-tank missiles. The performance of the missile is measured both by the gunner and the commander of the Advanced Target Acquisition System.
According to BDL, the third generation missile will be produced in three versions, which will have land, air-launched and portable versions. In today's test of the land version, the missile used infrared 'thermal intelligent vision' to strike its target. BDL unveiled the third generation anti-tank guided missile Amogha-3 at the Defense Expo in Lucknow on February 7, 2020. The missile has a conventional cylindrical body, eight mid-body foldable fins and four large aft fins for flight stabilization. The entire system has a Command Launch Unit (CLU) with missile tripod and remote operation capability.
BDL officials said the missile is powered by a dual-thrust rocket motor with thrust vector control, which is smokeless. The terminal seeker has a dual mode imaging infrared and electro-optical assembly. Amogha-3 missile can lock the target before launch and hit the target in top attack and direct attack mode. The air-launched version of the missile is being developed for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's (HAL) attack helicopter Rudra and Prachanda helicopters. Equipped with this missile, both the helicopters will enhance the firepower of the Army and the Air Force.
