Modi snatched mangalsutra, women mortgaging jewelry: Kharge to Modi

(Fast Mail News):--Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday, 5 March, attacked prime minister Narendra Modi over the rise in gold loans .

In a post on his “X” ,Kharge said the prime minister Narendra modi’s remarks during the Lok Sabha polls campaign about 'stealing of mangalsutras' have come true as women are forced to mortgage their gold ornaments under his rule.

Kharge said,” Between 2019 and 2024, 4 crore women have mortgaged their gold to take loans worth 4.7 lakh crore. In 2024, 38% of the total loans taken by women were gold loans”.

According to RBI data from February 2025, there was a massive 71.3% year-on-year surge in gold loans,Kharge added.

Kharge alleged that Modi government has  worsened the state of the economy so much that middle-class families who once bought two-wheelers are now unable to repay their loans.

In view of the rising loan defaults, two-wheeler financiers, for the first time since 2019, are cutting back on lending”,the congress chief said.

He said 75% of people buy two-wheelers on loans so they can repay them gradually, but the economic distress is so severe that, as of September 2024, nearly 2 lakh crore in loans remain outstanding compared to the previous year, with an increase of ?40,000 crore in a single year. In February 2025, two-wheeler sales saw a 6% decline.

Hitting out the prime minister Kharge said ,”Recession, financial strain, and empty pockets—this is the essence of the economy you have run”.
