PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi to meet on Feb 17 to select new Chief Election Commissioner

As the Chief Election Commissioner of India Rajiv Kumar is retiring on February 18,before that, a selection committee meeting has been called on February 17 to select the new Chief Election Commissioner.

The meeting will be attended by PM Modi, a Union Minister and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. After the recommendation of the committee, the President will appoint the next new Chief Election Commissioner.

So far the most senior Election Commissioner has been promoted as Chief Election Commissioner. At present, Gyanesh Kumar is the most senior Election Commissioner after Rajiv Kumar. His tenure is till January 26, 2029.

Sukhbir Singh Sandhu is the second senior election commissioner. In such a situation, it is being believed that Gyanesh Kumar can be appointed as the next Chief Election Commissioner. Apart from this, a new Election Commissioner can also be appointed in his place.

Ahead of Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar's retirement on February 18, the committee will meet on Monday at the Prime Minister's official residence. This committee will recommend one name from among the candidates shortlisted by a search committee. The President will then appoint the next Chief Election Commissioner based on the recommendation.

Until now, the senior most Election Commissioner (EC) has been promoted as Chief Election Commissioner after the retirement of the existing Chief Election Commissioner. However, after a new law came into effect last year on the appointments of Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioner, a search committee shortlists the names of five secretary-level officials and a committee headed by the prime minister considers them for appointment.
