President's rule imposed in Manipur

NEW DELHI: President's rule has been imposed in Manipur, according to reports.

The notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs announcing President's rule in Manipur said that President Draupadi Murmu believes that "a situation has arisen in which the Government of this State cannot function in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution."

The notification said, "Now, exercising the powers conferred by Article 356 of the Constitution, I declare that I, as President of India, hereby supersede all functions of the Government of the State of Manipur and all powers vested in or exercised by the Governor of this State."

The notification said that the assembly has been suspended.

Significantly, Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned from his post on Sunday. After this, Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla suspended the budget session starting from Monday.

His resignation came almost 2 years after ethnic violence broke out in Manipur in May 2023 and amid growing pressure from the opposition, which was constantly demanding his removal.

The Congress on Monday alleged that Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh's resignation ahead of the Congress' planned no-confidence motion in the Assembly was to save the BJP and not the people of Manipur as ethnic violence has been continuing for nearly two years.

hile Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi termed the decision as too late, Congress deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi alleged that the BJP had no roadmap to restore peace in the northeastern state.
