Social boycott slur village committee in Dhenkanal

DHENKANAL:The family members of an additional Superintendent of police in village Oukhama under Sadar police station in Dhenkanal district have alleged social boycott by the villagers for the last one year over a civil dispute.

But the village committee headman denied any boycott of the police officer’s family saying that rather they are living in fear.

The village Oukhama happens to be the native village of additional SP Niranjan Behera who has recently been promoted and posted in Baleswar district.

Reports said, there was a decision by the villagers to leave some portion of their land for the road which was obeyed by all the people of the village. But the behera’s family which has advanced their possession upto 5 feets of land had backed up to 2feet of the land. But the villagers demanded that the family should cede that portion of the land for the village road which was not agreed by police officer’s family. This had resulted in confrontation between village committee and the police officer’s family.

The police officer’s family members alleged that for the last one year there has been a social boycott of their family by the village committee. Village temples, shops and other areas have been banned for their family by the village committee, they said. They also said the villagers have not any social communications with them for which they suffer mental stress. They demand suitable actions against the village leaders for imposing social boycott on their family.

On the other hand, the village committee chairman Saroj Mohapatra has refuted all the charges of the police officer’s family. He said the police officer’s family didn’t obey the decision of the village committee to part with their land for the village common road. There has been no co social boycott on them. He stated that rather the villagers are in a state of fear as the family belongs to a police officer’s family. The family is free to do day to day business in the village.

Meanwhile, police said, there has been no evidence of social boycott in the village as alleged by the police officer’s family. There were two FIRs filed by the police officer’s family against the villagers out of which the police has a charge sheet in one case and  investigations are pending in another case.
