Sonia Gandhi respects President, her statement deliberately distorted: Priyanka Gandhi

 By Jagadananda Pradhan
NEW DELHI:Congress General Secretary and MP from Wayanad, Kerala, Priyanka Gandhi, retaliating to the BJP's attack on a comment made by Sonia Gandhi after the address of President Draupadi Murmu, said on Friday that her mother respected the President a lot and her words were deliberately distorted. She also said that the BJP, which is demanding an apology for Sonia Gandhi's remarks, should first apologize for 'destroying the country'.

Congress Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi said after President Draupadi Murmu's address in Parliament today that she was tired by the end of her address and was barely able to speak. Many BJP leaders, including Bharatiya Janata Party President JP Nadda, tried to create controversy over this and condemned Sonia Gandhi's remarks and demanded that she apologize unconditionally to the President and the tribal communities of India.

On BJP leaders raising controversy on the issue, Priyanka Gandhi told reporters in the Parliament premises, "My mother is an old woman of 78 years. She just said that the President must have got tired of reading such a long speech. She respects women a lot. It is very unfortunate that the media presented it in a distorted manner”.

When asked about the demand for apology from the BJP, the Congress General Secretary said, "They (BJP) have ruined the country, first apologize for that." Congress Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi posted on 'X', "Sonia Gandhi's sympathy for the health of Honorable President Draupadi Murmu ji is not digested by the people of BJP. Every person in India has respect and sympathy for the President."

He said, "Will the BJP respond to the disrespect towards President Murmu when she was not invited to the inauguration of Parliament House or Ram Mandir in Ayodhya? I challenge them to answer this question."
