Talcher: Thousands throng to witness Maa Hingula Yatra

The 9-day long famous Hingula Yatra began at Gopal Prasad,Talcher  today with traditional gaiety and religious fervour.

Thousands of people from Angul, Talcher and Dhenkanal thronged at Gopal Prasad to witness and offer puja to the goddess. The festival which started today will continue for nine days with cultural functions by artists and troupes drawn from the state and outside state. This year Maa Hingul,the goddess of fire, appeared at  Gopal Prasad High School field near Hingula mandira.

Legend said that the cosmic mother which is the presiding deity of Srimandira rosa sala leaves Srimandira today to come at Gopal Prasad.Like Ratha Yatra Puri the goddess appeared in public in form of fire to enable the people to see her and perform puja.

 

 Right from 2am today people started coming to Gopal Prasad and offered puja despite rain last night. The puja and the gathering are still on till the report is being filed.There were several meetings by puja committee chaired by Talcher sub collector Samir Kumar Jena earlier to observe the Yatra in a smooth manner. Today elaborate arrangements have been made by police with the deployment of police force under three additional PS, four DSPs besides inspectors and sub inspectors. There was a huge traffic rush for which police made traffic restrictions for vehicles. Opal Prasad inspector in-charge Saroj Kumar Nayak says Maa Hingula puja festival is going on in a smooth manner with thousands of people have attended. There were no untoward incidents and any anti-social activities during the puja celebration today.

The puja has been observed for the past many decades although there was a practice of animal sacrifice but this has been stopped for the last fifteen years ago.
