Turkey and Syria earthquake death toll crosses12,000: Know the scientific reason behind this devastation

mail@fmnews.in

ISTANBUL:
As the devastation continues in Turkey and Syria due to the earthquake on Monday and Tuesday, the death toll from the earthquake has crossed 12,000. The death toll may increase even more, according to rescuers.

Scientific reason behind these devastating earthquakes.

The region where the earthquake occurred is located along a well-known seismic fault line called the Anatolia tectonic block, which runs through northern-central and eastern Turkey. According to reports,it is a seismically active region. Although not as active as the Himalayan region, which is one of the most dangerous regions in the world from the point of view of earthquakes.

Earthquakes of magnitude 5 or more have not occurred very frequently in recent years. According to the USGS, only three earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater have occurred in the region since 1970. The last major earthquake in this region occurred in January 2020.

Reports said, seismicity in this region is the result of interactions between the African, Eurasian and Arabian plates. Which is known to push the Arabian Plate northward, resulting in westward movement for the Anatolian Plate, where Turkey is located. The USGS said Monday's earthquake occurred around a near-vertical fault line on the Eastern Anatolian Block, close to the Syrian border.

The USGS said the earthquake's mechanism and location were consistent with an earthquake on the Eastern Anatolia Fault Zone or Dead Sea Transform Fault Zone.

Earthquakes remain the most common natural hazard that cannot be predicted. For which no early warning system has been developed so far.

The earthquake that hit Nepal two weeks ago whose tremors were felt in many parts of northern India, for example originated about 25 km below the Earth's surface. It did not cause widespread damage, although a woman was reported killed by a boulder that fell from a hill due to the tremors.
