Two workers killed,two injured in Rungta Steel mishap in Dhenkanal

 DHENKANAL:In a tragic mishap two contract workers were killed and another two seriously injured  when they fell down from around 10 meter height in the Direct Reduced iron(DRI) plant of Rungta Steel plant at Jhadabandha in Odisha's  Dhenkanal district here today morning. The deceased have been identified as Vivekananda Sahoo,35 of West Medinipur in West Bengal and Bishnu Majhi,40  of Howrah in West Bengal.

The seriously injured Naba samanta,25 and Amul Bora,30, both belong to West Bengal.The two injured were first shifted to local Samal care hospital and then to a private hospital at Cuttack.

According to an informed sources , at about 8.15am the mishap occurred in project DRI below the Kiln no.8 .There was a base platform in Kiln no. 8 at an approximate height of 10 meter.While around 15 to 20 contract workers were working at the site the base platform suddenly collapsed to the ground killing two on the spot and injuring another two.It is said that the iron structure of the platform were not properly maintained by which it failed down on the ground.

 Hindol sub collector Sibanada Swain confirmed the incident saying two contract workers of West Bengal died on the spot and another two were seriously injured.He also said the mishap occurred due to the base platform falling down.

 

 

 After the mishap there tension triggered in Rungta area where hundreds of locals resorted to agitation outside the plant.They demanded rupees 50 lakh as compensation and a job to the victim’s family.Besides they also demanded implementation of proper safety measures and punishment to the errant authorities responsible for the  mishap.

The agitation was called off after five hours when the plant authorities agreed to provide rupees 20 lakh cash compensation to each of the deceased ad job to their family members.Hindol sub collector Sibanand Swain,Dhenkanal additional SP Suryamani Pradhan,Hindol SDPO Deepak Jena and Odapada Tehsildar among others rushed to the spot and controlled the situation.

 The additional SP said after the agitation was called off the body was sent to Dhenkanal for the post mortem.

 Rungta Company set up a Steel plant here in Hindol subdivision producing Steel. Rungta Steel has set up 2.85MTPA of Steel plant in Hindol subdivision.There  have been recurrent agitations by locals on issues of pollution and rehabilitation.

 Repeated attempts were made to contact PRO Ajay Kumar Das.But he didn’t respond.
