UGANDA: 10 dead in Kampala stampede during new year celebrations
KAMPALA: At least ten people were killed in a stampede during New Year's celebrations at a shopping mall in the Ugandan capital on Sunday. According to information, there was a stampede outside the Freedom City Mall in Kampala after the fireworks.
9 people have died and many others have been injured. After the incident, the administration that came to the rescue says that many injured have been taken to the hospital. Nine people have been confirmed dead here,according to reports.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyisigiire has stated that the incident occurred in the middle of the night when the MC of the event asked those present to go outside to watch the fireworks. Then there was a stampede. Five people died on the spot. In addition, ASP Owoyisigyere disclosed that many injured were rushed to the hospital where a total of nine people were confirmed dead after the mob crushed them.
The police said in their statement that Ugandans were celebrating the New Year like the rest of the world this time after two years of covid restrictions. The incident ocured during this time. Police have been investigating into the matter.
Firecrackers are not permitted after midnight. He said the celebrants were asked to go outside to watch the fireworks. People ran outside and this incident has occured.
