UP congress says government hiding Maha Kumbh stampede death toll

LUCKNOW : Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai on Friday accused the BJP government of Uttar Pradesh of hiding the correct figures of people who lost their lives and went missing in the stampede at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh last month, calling it the 'height of insensitivity'.

Ajay Rai said at the party headquarters, "Hundreds of people died, thousands  injured and thousands went missing  in the stampede at Maha Kumbh last month due to mismanagement. The Uttar Pradesh government is so insensitive that it has not been able to release any correct list of the missing and dead people till now."

He said, "Family members are wandering from door to door searching for their loved ones, but the Yogi government is hiding the correct figures just to cover up its failure. Many such dead did not even get the last rites as per religious rules. Some bodies were thrown into Ganga, some were lifted by bulldozers, some were burnt anonymously in electric crematoriums and some bodies are still lying in heaps of garbage. Perhaps this is the height of insensitivity.”

Ajay Rai claimed, “During the stampede, Sub-Inspector Anjani Kumar Rai, a resident of Ghazipur, also died. The chaos was such that this brave police constable did not get an ambulance on time. The irony is that the government is not ready to accept that Anjani Kumar Rai died due to stampede.” Rai said, “Talking to Anjani Kumar's family, the inhuman face of the Uttar Pradesh government is revealed as to how the ambulance to take Rai's dead body was available only after a long wait of 11 hours.”

The Congress state president claimed, “No government representative went to Anjani Rai's house, nor did they accept his martyrdom. When I went to his house on 5th February to meet his family, the next day on 6th February I reached the residence of Ghazipur Police Captain Anjani Kumar Rai. This weak, disorganized and useless administration of Yogi government is making every effort to hide its incompetence.”

It is worth noting that there was a terrible stampede late at night during the Amrit Snan of Mauni Amavasya in Prayagraj Mahakumbh. There were reports of many people dying in this accident. But 18 hours after the incident, the state government said in a statement that 30 devotees have died in this incident, while 60 others were injured. At the same time, many media reports are claiming that the death toll is above 80 and 100.
